South Indian Simple Sambar Recipe

Ingredients:

4 tbsp – Oil
1/2 tsp – Asofedita (Full Hing)
2 tbsp – Coriander seeds
1 tbsp – Cumin seeds
1 tbsp – Garlic cloves
4 No – Kashmiri red chilli
1 tbsp – Bengal gram (channa dal)
3 tbsp – Coconut (grated)
1 No – Onion large chopped
1 No – Green pepper chopped
5 No – Red pumpkin pieces (bhopla)
5 No – Drumstick slices
1 cup – Orange lentils (masoor dal)
1/2 tsp – Mustard seeds (optional)
1 tbsp – Jaggery
1 tbsp – Curry leaves
1 tbsp – Tamarind dissolved in hot water
Salt to taste

Directions

For paste

Heat the tawa and  fry  Hing ,Coriander seeds, Cumin seeds,Garlic cloves, red chilli,Bengal gram , Coconut (grated) and make a fine paste.

Take 2nd to the 7th ingredient and briefly fry them and then grind to make a paste.

Steam the lentil/dal in 2 cups of water.

 Once cooked let it cool and then blend in a food processor or with a hand blender.


Fry  mustard seeds, onions, capsicum, pumpkin and drumsticks in a pan.

Then add the ground paste cook for 1-2 mins.

Add the dal and let it come to a boil (if there is any froth please remove it).

Add the curry leaves, tamarind water and jaggery. Cook for another 8-10 mins. Serve hot.

Vegetables are  optional for  the variation of Sambar
